French Drains are trenches that contain a perforated drainpipe that is surrounded by gravel. The entire trench will be lined with filter fabric or the pipe is wrapped in filter fabric. Most of the time, the trench is covered with grass.
How Long Do French Drains Last?
If the trench of the french drain is lined with filter cloth the drain will last for many years. But, if the pipe is the only thing wrapped in filter cloth, soil will wash into the gravel in just a couple years.
When Do You Use A French Drain?
French drains are designed to remove water that is accumulating at the surface. They are very good at collecting water that is gathering in marshy or soaked areas that has been created by poor drainage or over watering.
How Do We Install Them?
French drains can be a very effective way for draining subsurface water away from a foundation. We start with digging a trench and grade it so the bottom is flat and evenly sloped. We then place the fabric and a perforated pipe is then laid on the gravel. The top of the trench is then filled with soil. French drains either work with gravity, or if enough slope is available they can be connected to a sump pump.
TIP: If you fill up your french drain with water by overloading it, you can cause serious damage to your home.
